I happened upon a photo of this Old Woodburn(t-159) and did a little cropping to stand it on it's own. A fabulous "almost" from a few years ago. I hope A.P. doesn't mind me slapping it up here. If he was trolling EBAY for a reaction, well, he caught a Utah sucker.. This broken example is by far the nicest color of the known examples of the Woodburn. Not that there is a large sample to compare with.. 3 whole ones known, and just a small handful of broken ones ever found.
One of the top western glob fifths, and a very interesting bottle. You "R" affectionados gotta love this bottle. Three different fonts on one bottle. In WOODBURN it is the so-called eastern font, but actually the lettering style is being true to the trade mark application. VAN BERGEN, straight leg R, and in SAN FRANCISCO, a wild curved leg R. ????? Whatever...
Wow, that's one awesome Woody you have there! I remember years ago being offered the Doc Ritz example for 1500.
ReplyDeleteI live 5 miles away from where a Woodburn was dug. It is my number one fifth on my wish list...I will keep wishing as it has not happened in decades. There has to be more here somewhere...That light broken example would do just fine, at this point.
ReplyDeleteSole Agent, I just didnt have the heart to crop that broken Woodburn out of the picture when I listed the Jesse Moore fifth ! Glad you saw it and shared it here. We all now know that more then one batch of these killer fifths were blown. I went back to the pit about a month later and redug it in order to sift for the rest of the pcs and the top, but they werent in there. Not too surprising though, since the pit was 90's and that bottle was probably broken yrs before it got tossed into the pit. Found the older pit, and it was totally lame, a black ale, doll head, and a few meds. Go figure......

Miller, I understand your quest, as I moved to within 50 feet of where the Woodburn that OldCutters spoke of. Lived there for 2 yrs and dug and redug every place in the area w/o even getting a shard of a 'Burn. Must've been brought home on the train or something.....
