  2. Castle,

The re-born-again S.D. Show has begun to make some noise the past few years, largelt due to some very notebale displays! You may not expect to find the high-stakes caliber kind of stuff like a Clubhouse or Fatboy flask, but there always seem to be great color runs of bottles, well thought out displays, and very informative displays.

The pictured E. Martin & Co./Miller's Extra display was one of the show's award winners a few years back. The majority of the bottles were not mine. I simply threw in a few examples to broaden the display. We would have a whole more row or two of Miller's flasks and E. Martin fifths to add if we did it again this year....but we like to try and keep the displays new, exciting, and something that people haven't seen before.

I've found that my most memorable displays are the ones I do with my good friends in the hobby. A fellow western whiskey collector and mentor of mine, did a "crier" display at the S.D. show last year, then took it up a notch in quality and quantity of good bottles at the Pomona show. One other collector from the bay area joined in on the efforts and contributed some high-end key pieces to really make the display something special (Thanks A.P.)!

The S.D. show isn't Auburn or Reno. But like someone said on the Bitters blog, I've always managed to find some suprisingly awesome bottles at the show in the past couple of years. The S.D. show is where I found my Green Bird Cutter, Yellow Lilienthal Fifth, and very nice O.K. Cutter. Those are as nice of exmaples of fifths as I've found at any show.

I truly hope to see some of you there!

Now to decide whether to do a Western "Pairing/Counterpart" (flask/fifth) display or bring some of my favorite fifths for a color run....I better decide quick, as the show is just around the corner!

  3. J.F.,

My vote is in for the Western flask/fifth display. Sounds tasty!
