THANKS TO CHUCK ERICKSON, JUST ACQUIRED A GREAT ITEM TO GO WITH MY LABELED "CHENERY, SOUTHER & CO." FIFTH. RESIDING IN VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA, FOR THE LAST 135+ YEARS, THIS WESTERN BLOWN 5 GALLON, OLIVE GREEN, DEMIJOHN IS PACKED WITH STRAW AND REEDS IN A WOOD BOX MARKED "NEWMAN'S/ IMPROVED/ BOXED/ DEMIJOHN/ PATd MARCH 23d '75/ MANUFd BY THE/ S.F./ GLASSWORKS". ONE END IS MARKED "5 GAL./ SHERRY" AND THE OTHER END STATES " FROM/ CHENERY, SOUTHER & CO./ WHOLESALE/ LIQUOR/ DEALERS/ 213 & 217 CAL. ST./ SAN FRANCISCO". THE BOTTLE HAS NEVER BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOX, AND IT STILL CONTAINS 90% OF IT'S ORIGINAL WINE! MARKED ON THE LID IS "CHAS. H. OSBORNE/ VIRGINIA CITY". MY RESEARCH INDICATES THIS BOX WAS SHIPPED TO V.C. IN LATE 1875 OR 1876, SINCE SOME TIME SHORTLY AFTER THIS THE BOXES WERE MARKED "S.F. & PACIFIC GLASS WORKS" DUE TO THE TWO GLASSWORKS BEING CONSOLIDATED. LOT'S OF GREAT WESTERN HISTORY IN THIS ARTIFACT!
